plain, the Sermon on the

plain, the Sermon on the
Luke's much shorter version (6:17–36) of Matt.'s Sermon on the Mount. The reference to Jesus' descent to a level plain seems to be a contrived emendation of Matt.'s ‘on a mountain’ (5:1), since preaching on the level would not in itself call for such an explicit comment. To the beatitudes, Luke has added corresponding Woes, and it is characteristic of him that he draws attention to Jesus' attitude to wealth and poverty.
